Frequently asked questions

Which powders do I actually need for a French set?

Four, in most cases. Natural Set as the foundation layer, a pink for the nail bed, French White or American White for the tip, and Natural Set Sheer or Crystal Sheer on top so the surface can be filed level without cutting into the white. Everything else on this page solves a specific problem rather than being part of the standard set: Natural Fill for tips, Natural Balance Out for damaged nails, Sunscreen against yellowing, and the four glitters for accent work.

What is the difference between French White and American White?

French White is an intense, pure white that gives a bright, crisp smile line. American White is softer and creamier, and it is the one most techs reach for when working in the French dip mould. Neither is better. It is the difference between a French that announces itself and one that reads quietly, and most salons stock both because clients ask for both.

Can you do a French manicure with dip powder?

Yes, and the French dip mould is what makes it practical. Instead of painting the smile line freehand, you dip the tip of the nail into the moulded well so the white lands exactly where the shape puts it. We developed that mould, and it is the reason a dip French takes minutes rather than a very steady hand. It is a tool rather than a powder, so it sits outside this page, but you will want one before the first set.

What does the Sunscreen powder do?

It goes over a finished pink and white to stop the white and the paler shades yellowing. Sun exposure does it, and so do chemicals like hair dye, which is why it matters more for some clients than others. If somebody is outdoors a lot or works behind a color bowl all day, that one extra layer is the difference between a set that still looks clean at week two and one that has gone warm.

What size jar should a salon buy?

Two or three in 16oz and everything else small. The jars you touch every single day, usually one white, one pink and a sheer, earn the big size. The glitters, Sunscreen, Natural Fill and Natural Balance Out are occasional powders and 2oz is plenty. Buying 16oz across the board ties up money in powder that will sit on the shelf.

What is a pink and white set?

A French. A pale pink or natural shade across the nail bed, a white tip with a clean smile line between them, and nothing else. It's the oldest look in the trade and it still books more appointments than anything else, because it reads as groomed rather than as a statement.

Done with dip, it is built from separate powders rather than painted freehand. A foundation layer for strength, a pink for the bed, a white for the tip, and usually a clear sheer on top so the whole surface can be filed level before it is sealed. That's why this page is a set of jars with jobs rather than a row of colors.

SNS was the first to create a pink and white dipping system, and the French dip mould we developed is what took the smile line off the brush and made it repeatable.

The 15 core powders and what each one is for

These are the working jars. Most of a French set uses three or four of them, and the rest solve specific problems.

PowderWhat it does
Natural SetThe foundation layer. Lays a strong base under the pink or the color, and can be worn on its own for a completely natural, very strong nail.
Natural Set SheerGoes on top of the finished color so you can buff and file the surface level without cutting into the color. Adds strength, and it is the one to use for glitter and encapsulation work.
Crystal SheerThe same job as Natural Set Sheer but clearer. Use it when you want the layer above the color to disappear completely.
French WhiteAn intense, bright white for the tip. This is the pure white that gives the crisp freehand-looking smile.
American WhiteA soft, creamy white. The quieter of the two whites, and the one most techs reach for in the French dip mould.
Natural PinkThe everyday cover pink for the nail bed.
Dark PinkMore coverage than Natural Pink, for a warmer, deeper bed.
X-Dark PinkThe deepest of the three pinks.
Natural Balance OutFor nails damaged by traditional acrylics or over-filing. Replaces the first pink layer and gives more opaque coverage, so an uneven nail reads level.
Natural FillFor work with tips. Hides the seam where the tip meets the natural nail.
SunscreenGoes over the finished set to stop the white and the pale shades yellowing from sun exposure or from chemicals like hair dye. Worth it on any client who is outdoors or behind a color bowl all day.
Pink Glitter F1, Pink Glitter F2Two pink glitters for glitter French and accent work.
French White Glitter F3A white glitter for the tip.
Natural Pink Glitter F4A glitter in the natural pink tone, for a subtler shimmer across the bed.

All 15 come in 2oz, 4oz and 16oz. The 2oz starts at $31.00.

The 4-in-1 range, and the ombres

Alongside the dip-only jars sits a separate 4-in-1 line, sold in 16oz at $70.00, with 13 shades. It covers the same French staples, French White, American White, Crystal Sheer, plus three Clear Pinks, a Milky White, and something the dip-only range does not have: three Nude Ombres and three Pink Ombres.

The ombres matter because a graded bed is the modern version of this look. Instead of a hard smile line, the pink fades up the nail and the tip is barely a tip at all. Buying the gradient as a powder rather than blending it by hand is what makes it repeatable on a full column of clients.

Which size should you buy?

  • 2oz for the powders you use occasionally: the glitters, Sunscreen, Natural Fill, Natural Balance Out.
  • 4oz for the pinks, if French is a steady part of your book rather than the whole of it.
  • 16oz for whatever you touch every single day. In a salon doing French properly that is usually the white, one pink, and a sheer.

The honest guidance is that most stations need two or three jars in the big size and everything else small. Buying 16oz across the board just ties up money in powder that'll sit.

The French dip mould

The mould is the piece that makes dip French practical. Rather than painting a smile line, you dip the tip of the nail into the moulded well, which lays the white exactly where the shape says it goes. It's why a French dip set takes minutes rather than a steady hand, and it is the thing we developed that changed how this look is done in a dip system.

It isn't on this page because it's a tool rather than a powder, but you'll want one before the first set.

How do you do a French with dip?

  1. Prep as normal. Cuticles back, never cut, shape, buff, then wipe with alcohol or acetone so no oil is left on the plate.
  2. Base coat, then Natural Set as the foundation layer. It's the step people skip, and then they wonder why the set lifts.
  3. Base again, then your pink across the whole nail. Natural Balance Out instead of the first pink if the nail underneath is uneven.
  4. Base on the tip only, then the white, using the mould for the smile line.
  5. Natural Set Sheer or Crystal Sheer over the top so you can file the surface level without cutting the white.
  6. Activator, then file and buff, then a second coat of activator.
  7. Sunscreen if the client is in the sun or works with chemicals, then two thin coats of top coat.

Our guide to pink and white manicures with dip powder walks the whole thing through, and how to do a French manicure at home is the version for somebody doing their own.
